The challenge of applying Bowen Theory to one's own life will be addressed through the review of four Bowen concepts and the work on the participant's own family diagrams. The course is primarily designed for those somewhat familiar with Bowen family systems theory and who want to advance in the knowledge of self and the systems in which they function.

A working family diagram with a minimum of two generations is essential for participation in this course. Participants will trace Triangles, Family Emotional Process, Differentiation of Self and Cut Off in the nuclear family and in previous generations. This will provide not only the theory, but a way to apply the theory to your own particular family and situation.

Families and clinicians will gain equally from this opportunity to observe the way clinical families apply family systems thinking to a variety of family and individual issues. This includes learning to observe the system while addressing the importance of individual responsibility and personal development in the form of differentiation of self. The basic concepts in Bowen theory will be presented along with the clinical sessions.

The course will demonstrate the application of Bowen theory in several different clinical families via videotape of actual sessions. The course also uses lecture and discussion to provide a theoretical understanding of the symptoms and the way the symptoms are addressed by the clinician and the families. The videos include sessions with Dr. Bowen and Louise Rauseo as the clinician.
