History of Programs at the Border
Programs in Bowen theory were started in El Paso in 1995 by Louise
Rauseo with introductory courses in the study of emotional systems for
professionals and families. By 1998, some interested participants
requested a more formal program of training. The program was designed
to include faculty from the Bowen Center in Washington, DC and from
Houston. These classes met for two days four times a year. At the same
time, programs were developed for families at a church in Cd. Juárez,
Chih. Mx.
Early in 1999, the El Paso programs were incorporated into the Center
for the Study of Natural Systems and Family, a not-for-profit
organization founded in Houston by Victoria Harrison. Ms. Harrison and
Mrs. Rauseo were both trained at Georgetown Family Center (The Bowen
Center for the Study of the Family) and continue as faculty at the Bowen
Center as well as in programs in Texas. That year an advisory committee
was formed to help guide the development of Bowen Theory programs at the
border. In the summer of 1999, Mrs. Rauseo returned to Maryland and now
"commutes" to the border on a regular basis. Various classes,
conferences, and consultation groups have evolved to meet the needs of
the community. Conferences and classes are bilingual when possible.
Some members of the Advisory Committee have studied at the Bowen Center
in Washington, DC and are developing their own expertise and interests
in the community. Currently, Ada Luisa Trillo is providing classes and
conferences in Spanish in Cd. Juárez and El Paso. The program
development continues as interests and talents emerge.
